ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you an experienced Mechatronic Engineer who thrives on solving complex engineering challenges in a dynamic, real-world environment? Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCA) is seeking a talented Design Engineer to join our national Engineering Division.
You'll work at the cutting edge of heavy equipment design — creating, modifying, and improving engineering solutions for some of Australia's most demanding applications. From hydraulic and electrical systems to structural design and on-site testing, this role puts your technical skills to work in an environment that genuinely values engineering excellence.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

• Design new systems and improve existing designs using engineering calculations, computational methods, and industry standards
• Produce manufacturing drawings, test procedures, technical reports, and QA documentation
• Manage project risk — identify, assess, and implement appropriate controls
• Communicate design concepts clearly to internal and external stakeholders
• Evaluate and close out projects against defined success criteria and customer deliverables
• Travel to sites to support test procedures, trials, and installations

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Essential
• Bachelor's Degree in Mechatronic Engineering (or equivalent)
• Minimum 5 years' experience in a design engineering role
• Technical proficiency in hydraulic and electrical circuit design and schematics
• Mechanical design capability with strong diagnostics and problem-solving skills
• Experience applying engineering calculations and interpreting Australian and/or International Standards
• Knowledge of welded structures and manufacturing processes
• Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) with FEA experience
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently and in a team

Highly Advantageous
• Experience with mobile plant — trucks, excavators, loaders, dozers, graders
• Hands-on experience developing solutions (measuring, fitting, and testing)
• Project Management qualifications or experience
• Welding certification, 6Sigma/Lean Manufacturing exposure
• EA registration/membership or Mechatronic RPEQ
• Experience with PDM Drawing Management Systems

WHY JOIN HCA?

• Work for a globally recognised brand with a proud heritage of innovation and engineering excellence
• Collaborate with a skilled, multidisciplinary team across Australia
• Genuine exposure to complex, high-impact projects across heavy industry
• Continuous learning and development in a culture that invests in its people
• A workplace built on the Hitachi values of harmony (Wa), sincerity (Makoto), and pioneering spirit (Kaitakusha-Seishin)
